Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare for position and set up of mobile lighting
   • Access, interpret and apply service and maintenance documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Receive, interpret and clarify shift changeover details
   • Select appropriate type of equipment and/or attachments
   • Identify and obtain barricade and signage requirements
   • Conduct equipment pre-start checks
   • Secure all equipment in preparation for towing
   • Communicate and coordinate activities with others throughout the work activity
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures to ensure safety of personnel, plant and equipment
2. Position and activate lighting
   • Isolate area using physical barricades and signage
   • Position lighting to suit work activities and site conditions
   • Test lights according to schedule, including start-up and shutdown procedures
   • Activate lights according to schedule
   • Assess visibility of site and suitability of lighting location; reposition as required
   • Continually assess risk to ensure enhanced illumination does not adversely affect safety

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates, applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures for the positioning and set up of mobile lighting

works effectively with others to position and set up of mobile lighting that meets all of the required outcomes including:

organising work activities to meet all task requirements

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

communicating clearly and concisely with others to resolve coordination requirements prior to commencing and during work activities

demonstrates completion of positioning and setting up of mobile lighting that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

planning and preparing for mobile lighting

isolating area using physical barricades and signage

conducting equipment pre-start checks

positioning and activating lighting

testing lights

assessing visibility

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in position and set up of mobile lighting through:

accessing, interpreting and applying the organisational and site requirements and procedures for:

set up

work health and safety

environmental and heritage

start-up, shut down and operational checks

towing

isolation

identifying equipment processes, technical capability and limitations
